Is BJP nuts?

I just saw BJP’s election manifesto for IT and couldn’t stop myself from writing about it.

  • 1 crore students to get laptop computers at Rs 10,000. Interest-free loan for anyone unable to afford it.
  • Broadband Internet in every town and village, with unlimited upload and download data transfer limits, at cable TV prices.

Facts drawn from their election manifesto

What I am interested in – is just calculating that by implementing the aforesaid points (if they ever do) – how much loss would they accumulate for Indian economy…

1 crore students to get laptop computers at Rs 10,000. Interest-free loan for anyone unable to afford it.

Cost of a laptop = INR 35,000
Distribution price by BJP = INR 10,000
Net loss per laptop = INR 25,000
Number of laptops = 1,00,00,000
Total Net loss = INR 2,50,00,00,00,000 = USD 5 Billion – (A)

Broadband Internet in every town and village, with unlimited upload and download data transfer limits, at cable TV prices.

Cost of 2 Mbps internet = INR 1000 per month (Airtel, BSNL, etc)
Distribution price by BJP = INR 200 per month
Net loss per month = INR 800 per user
Net loss for a 5 year period = INR 800 * 12 * 5 = INR 48,000 per user
Number of internet connections = 5,00,000 (approx)
Total net loss for a 5 year term = INR 24,00,00,00,000 = USD 480 Million – (B)

Total loss accumulated by BJP in their 5 year term = USD 5.48 Billion (A + B)

As per Wikipedia, India’s total Public Debt is nearly USD 163.8 Billion (2008) – adding another USD 5.48 Billion to it dosn’t makes any sense…

Is BJP seriously nuts?

Well said. But its your fault that first you listened and read the manifesto and then even calculated the amount. Dude, what’s the use of internet, when all these villages don’t even get electricity or in that sense any civic facility…

First of all – I am not supporter of BJP but my response might look like that.

Since many people/organizations are trying to create low cost laptop this might significantly reduce the cost. If USD 100 laptop come up then the 5 Billion cost reduces to zero.

And cost or broadband is inflated by these ISPs. The actual cost is negligible. Our existing infrastructure is capable of supporting broadband in every town. Just that these companies are earning unethical profits. Governments will have to do something about this. Compare price of a broadband connection with that in US or other developed countries.

I have a different take on this one …just a perspective.
By doing(or atleast saying) this the BJP is giving the under privileged a chance to access technology/Education at a lower price. It is much better than the congress lead governments policy to increase reservations in higher ed institutes.
I think it is a sensible move to invest in education – our Nation’s future.
Please do not think of it as fiscal deficit. And as Mr pankaj points out ..the cost of the internet technology is getting cheaper by each passing day!
Do you remember the time when we had to pay for incoming calls on our mobile phones?????!!!!
And now we have Service providers like Tata/BSNL and Rilaance who have plans with unlimited talktime!
So I think it would be a step in the right direction ! remember soochana kranti?
I do agree that it sounds implausible but atleast the vision is right!

Hey and this might even bring more customers at your(apnabill’s) door step!

I understand that there are other pressing issues but education and communication are important as well….. we need to keep an eye on the future too!

    whats say ?

I agree with Pankaj. 35K laptops are far away. In india, you can get good laptop for 20-25K right now (not too powerful, but sufficient for students for internet or offline wikipedia). And this dream is very much possible.
Cost of technology (Internet) gets cheaper as user base is increases!

    Heard about OLPC? Netbooks?

Broadband is not costly, it is just damn ISPs making life hard for us!

They are not nuts … they have now relised how to win elections. It does not matter what you deliver, what matters is your promises.

I remember congress gaining power in AP and Maharashtra on the promise of free electricity to farmers. Forget free, rural areas dont get electricity at all :D

Nice language you are using. I thought you are educated. I am ashamed of myself now that I indulged in a dialog with you.
